4 Tips for Your Patio Furniture Repair

Doing your own patio furniture repairs can certainly make better sense, because you will be able to stretch your money and give the patio furniture the appropriate attention it deserve. Here are several noteworthy tips you can safely try when you do your own patio furniture repair.

Don't you just love to loll around on a comfortable chaise? However, to stay safe and secure, you should check if your chaise is an old furniture model. Does it have a headrest, which can be adjusted into various positions? What makes these adjustments possible to perform are the headrests' ratchets or claws.

However, the downside to this convenience is that repeated adjustments will weaken the support of the headrest, causing a collapse without any warning. You could get your fingers crushed between the headrest and the back of the chaise. How do you go about repairing this piece of furniture?

Patio Furniture Repair Tip #1

First, check if the headrest wobbles, it should not. Then check the screws that keep the ratchet together. Are these chipped, rusting, or worse broken? Buy replacement parts.

Patio Furniture Repair Tip #2

If the frame wallowed out holes, you can weld these holes and then drill these tight.

Patio Furniture Repair Tip #3

Even if the ratchet is not worn out, it may have become inflexible, have a coarse or rough feel to it. In which case the right repair tip is to remove the rivets and purchase new ones or, better yet, put in durable steel screws.

Patio Furniture Repair Tip #4

Do your vinyl straps look worn and damaged? If the answer is yes, this is because of the normal wear and tear use, as well as commercial chemicals, the juice and saps of your plants and shrubs, and strong cleaning chemicals. How do you go about to repair this particular problem?

Here is how you can restore the clean look of your vinyl straps. For vinyl straps with not too stubborn stains, you can mix a 20% household-cleaning agent, with 80% water, and make sure to mix these two ingredients well. When the mixture is bubbly and sudsy, you can dip a scrub into the mixture, after which you can apply the mixture to the vinyl straps.

Finally, be sure to conduct regular inspections of your patio furniture so you can perform patio furniture repair while the need is still minimal.

Giving Your Bathroom a Makeover

According to contractors, the room that is undergoing the greatest amount of transformation in new construction and remodeling is the bathroom. In fact, since the 1930s, the average master bath has tripled in size and the huge bathrooms build in houses today have even an oversized closet inside. The change in bathroom space is attributed to the fact that people are now spending more time in their bathrooms when they wish to relax while taking a bath. Experts point out, that the weekend spa mentality has developed into a new lifestyle trend with which Americans feel comfortable and want to experience on a daily basis without leaving the comfort of their own home.

Since the bathroom space has increased, the new updated version calls for an addition of bathroom furniture, which can make any bathroom feel less sterilized and bring in the feeling of comfort that used to be associated with other rooms of the house, like the bedroom or living-room. Moreover, the additional furniture pieces provide extra storage space; something that is definitely needed nowadays by both women and men. To cover the demand, many bathroom cabinet manufacturers offer now sinks set in furniture pieces, which are designed specifically for bathroom use. Options now range from modern glass and steel pieces, to old renaissance dressers and armoires. Moreover, people tend to mix and match furniture and trim their uncovered surfaces in order to make them blend with the flooring, connecting the bathroom to the rest of the house.

But apart from the amount of space available and selecting the right type of furniture, today's bathroom-users also want to create a bathroom in which they can relax and rejuvenate. These moments of relaxation can be enhanced with simple additions, like a bathroom stool near the tub or in the shower, or if the space permits it with an ottoman for some precious relaxing times. Furthermore, the right type of lighting can be installed quickly altering the feeling one has while taking a bath. Again candles, small regular lamps on the vanity or shelves can transform the bathroom and give it the feeling of tranquility.

Extremely important apart from the furniture selected is the bathroom's flooring. Tile or wood can enhance the overall appearance of the bathroom and their designs can be matched to blend with the house's other rooms. Also, the color of the walls or the wallpaper selected to be placed have to match the rest of the area, like the floor, the sink and the bathtub creating a unified outcome. If you decide to go with the wallpaper option, be extremely cautious as it has to be installed really well in order not to fall off the walls as you steam your bath.

Finally, keep your bathroom organized and clean. Numerous scattered items give a feeling of clutter and do not help you enjoy this room of your house. Furthermore, select towels and bathrobes that are soft and fluffy. It is better if their colors and design matches the rest of the bathroom, but most importantly they have to be replenished with new ones almost every year so you will continue feeling the same snugly sensation every time you exit the shower.

Patching a Hole in Six Easy Steps

How many of you have ever come into the house a little too fast and slammed your doorknob through the drywall? Sound familiar? Well here are six simple steps to fixing any hole in your home, saving you costly repairs in the future.

To patch your hole, you will need the following:

Carpenter's Square with Level Wallboard Saw Scrap Piece of Wallboard Hot Glue Gun Wallboard Tape (Generally Made of Fiberglass) Premixed Taping Compound (Wall Putty) Putty Knife Wet Sander

Note: You can pick up all of these things at your local Lowe's, Home Depot or any other home improvement store.

And now the six simple steps:

1. First, you want to outline (draw a square) around the damaged area with your carpenter's square.

2. Next, you will use your wallboard saw and cut the outline out, removing all of the damaged area.

3. After this, use your extra piece of wallboard as a backer to hold the patch. Now, to do this, you will need to put hot glue on the top part of the wallboard piece and place it on the inside of the hole. 4. Now you will cut a piece of wallboard to fit the opening. Note: Be sure that your piece is the same thickness as the wall. As in step 3, apply hot glue on one side of the piece and press it against the backer piece (from step 3) until the glue sets.

5. The next step is to use the wallboard tape on the seams of the wallboard piece. You will then have to cover the tape and hole with the taping compound using your putty knife.

6. Last step! After compound dries for the first time, apply another coat. Once that layer dries, you will then use your wet sander( after wetting it) and lightly sand the compound until the area smoothes. Re-paint it and you're done!!

Now wasn't that easy? And you thought you could never do something like this. Great job!!

Cloth, Leather, and Fiber Material Mending

Have you ever torn a favorite leather, vinyl or cloth material and was just sick about it? How about a car seat, boat seat, or recliner? You typically have to decide whether to toss the ripped article in the trash, or pay a hefty mending fee. I found that there is at least one other alternative to either tossing the article or paying a large mending fee. There are chemical mending products that repair textiles, leather, and other fiber products.

Chemical mending products can be very instrumental in saving cloth, leather and fiber articles. Some can be very quickly applied and some are very easy to use. It is best to look at cloth mending chemicals that remain soft in all temperatures, chemicals that can be washed and ironed, and chemicals that are resistant to heat and cold. The mending chemical you choose should be colorless so the chemical does not impart its color onto the fabric being mended.

The typical application method for chemical mending products is to join the tear together and apply the mending chemical to back side of the tear. The tear, with the mending chemical applied, is held in place for a few minutes and that is all there is to it.

It is best to thoroughly read what each mending chemical manufacturer has to say about their particular product to obtain the best results. It is a good idea to always try a chosen chemical in an inconspicuous area prior to using it in an exposed area.

Many folks are finding that they are able to save money by performing quality fabric repairs on their own, and are able to hold on to that favorite article.

The Basics Of Hardwood Flooring

One of the greatest things you can do for your home is to get hardwood floors, there is something about hardwood floors that makes a house, a feeling that is unique to hardwood floors and if you ever visited a house that had these kind of floors I am almost sure you know what I mean.

Hardwood floors are a great design idea, one of the most significant home improvement tricks in the business and a wonderful way of making a house feel a whole lot like a home. For those of you in the market for a new house this is one thing that you should look for, and if you can not find a house that already has hardwood floors you should think about getting them right away. On the other hand any house that has quality hardwood floors would enjoy a significant increase to its value and the level of interests from the potential buyers, it has been proven that hardwood floors are one of the major house selling features in this market.

The other great thing about hardwood floors is that there is a huge selection of hardwood in the market, this means that you can choose the exact color you want for each room or for the whole house, there is no need to compromise on the looks of the hardwood floors simply because there is such a verity of color and textures that almost anyone can find what is best for him or her house.

A good quality hardwood flooring will serve a house for many years, it creates a perfect setting for a nice and warm house, the hardwood is certainly for those who like to build their house as a warm and friendly place, wood furniture and warm colored walls will make a house with hardwood floors look right at any time and for any propose, the only question is on what shade of wood will the home owner go.

The advantages of having a hardwood floor is that it is relatively easy to clean and that in the last few years there have been a lot of cleaning products that have been developed exclusively for cleaning hardwood, it is also true that natural wood will collect less dirt and dust than other materials so the mere fact of having hardwood will keep the house a little cleaner, and making your life a little easier if you have kids and you worry about the air quality in your house and dust levels in the kids rooms.

For those in the market for a new hardwood flooring there are a few basic questions they will need to think about, the costs are an important part of hardwood floors and the whole design that comes with them is also an issue and maintenance is not such a big deal. Only one thing is sure, if you get quality hardwood floors you will enjoy a unique feature and in a very short time you will not understand how you could have lived in a space that had no wood floors.

The Basics Of Fencing Your Yard

Whenever one looks at houses while driving down the subdivision, fences are rarely eye-catching. Fences are usually a component of the whole backdrop of a house, and perhaps this is the main essence of a fence. The beauty of a house is made to stand out through the use of fences and it should not be the other way around. Fences accentuate the natural splendor of one's home, and properly choosing and installing fences are key ingredients towards attaining that specific goal.

There are many reasons why people would want to put fences on their yard or reinstall new ones. For those houses which never had fences, the owners may want to have some sense of privacy and security, even though in reality, fences don't really provide security and privacy. Nonetheless, fences concretize the boundaries of one's properties. This is a very important thing that fences provide. Other people would want to install fences so that their pets and small children would not go out of their yards.

Types of Fences

When installing fences in one's yard, there are many types that one can choose from. Fences that are made from timber are by far, are arguably the most popular ones. These are quite cheap, versatile and come in different shapes and sizes. These are also preferred by some buyers because they are environment-friendly. However, timber can rot and some types of timber fences are no-good in terms of quality.

Modern houses usually have brick or cement fences. Brick fences are popular because of their sturdiness and durability. The colors selection is also endless. These, however, are more expensive than timber fences. There are also steel fences which are lightweight and quite strong. Steel fences can, however, make irritating noise, especially if it's windy or rainy.

There are also stone fences and those which are made from natural materials such as bamboo, cane and reed.

In fencing up one's yard, one has to take into consideration some of the following factors to be able to make the project a successful and fulfilling. Here are some of them:

Local Laws and Permits

There are different laws regarding the installation of fences in different parts of the country. Most local fencing laws would prohibit fences that are more than 6 feet in height to be able to preserve the aesthetic value of the whole place. One should consult the local authorities before even proceeding with the selection process. A practical idea is to ask one's neighbor about his experiences when he was putting up his fence.

Cost of Materials

After one has consulted the local laws and permit stipulations, he can now go on with the fence selection process (choices will be limited in accordance with the local laws). One of the most important things to look at when selecting fencing materials, as with any kind of materials, is the cost of the different choices. The different materials vary in cost. Timber, bamboo and other natural materials usually cost less than brick and stone fences.

Perspectives

Privacy is one o the main reasons why fences are build. However, fences should not obstruct the view of the owners from inside. Fences that are too tall tend to do this. Avoid building a Berlin Wall between your house and the street as much as possible.

Strength and Durability

Again, different materials vary in terms of strength and durability. Brick, stone and steel fences are to be installed by homeowners who would prefer stability than design and appearance. Make sure that the not-so-strong fences such as timber and bamboo fences are protected from vines. Vines may not seem harmful to fences but they are actually one of the reasons why fences break down. They drag the fences down through their weight.

Installing the Fence

One can hire professionals in putting up the fence. Perhaps, he can contract the friendly neighborhood carpenter to do this for him. If one is to install the fence by himself, he should use a chart where the exact distance of the fence can be indicated. This makes placing the posts much more easier and will make the installation smoother.

These are just some of the few tips that we can share with you. Remember that fences are sideshows and the house is the main attraction. Remember this rule and you'll be fine.

Household Mold and Prevention

Mold prevention is a must for a healthier lifestyle. Did know that there are over a hundred thousand species of mold? and some of these biological organisms can cause serious health problems in the household from breathing the spores that float around.

These microscopic fungi are to small to be seen by the naked eye, float around in the air, can cause serious damage to a wood structure and can thrive and grow in certain indoor conditions like behind walls where exposed to water and moisture.

Molds such as fungus mold and slime molds are most often found in areas that have high humidity levels. Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms or damp basements (especially after flooding) are prone to mold growth and reproduction and this can prove to be a serious health and hygiene problem, if not checked immediately.

If your family members are having allergy and flu like symptoms that are impairing there health you need to seriously think of testing for mold by using a mold sampling kit, with the sample being sent to a laboratory for examination If proven as toxic results you should remove yourself from the premises and have a professional clear the problem once and for all, for your health reasons.

The only solution to mold is to get rid of it once and for all by hiring a professional which may be expensive unless your home owners insurance can flip the bill. However, hope springs eternal and there are many established mold cleaning, prevention, and mold removal methods to deal with this persistent problem that really do works for do it yourself means.

Preventing Mold

Once you are rid of the mold the next step is to ensure that it will not return by checking for excessive humidity, moisture, water seepage especially in area of bathroom, kitchen and anyplace where water exists and remedy immediately.

Dehumidifiers can be very useful. Vapor steam cleaning or vacuuming with High Efficiency Particulate Absolute (HEPA) filter vacuums can reduce mold spore concentrations in damp areas and carpets, but if not done properly mold spores can remain or be spread into the air.

Basements are a prime breeding ground for mold and must be kept dry with a humidity level at about 50% relative humidity or lower to prevent mold growth.

Attics are another prime area for mold to grow and if you notice any water stains on the ceiling, or rusty nails is best to check for mold to be safe.

Use a strong solution of bleach mixed with water to kill the organism and always wear a mask so you don't inhale any of the spores.

Remember mold can be a serious health issue and is something to not take light hearted. Always be on the lookout and be prepared to remedy at once.

Guide To Patio Furniture Cushion

Very often accessories can make the item it is meant to enhance look much worse; this is true whether you have a house, a car, or a patio. The accessories are always extremely important, but in a patio you can say that they are absolutely crucial.

Why and What Are Patio Furniture Cushion Used for?

Any patio chair would be incomplete without the right cushion installed and showcased on the patio. So when it comes to a cushion, make sure that you do not compromise on the quality because any compromise here would actually ruin the effect of the best and most expensive wood. At the same time, the right patio furniture cushion can make cheaper style patio furniture into an eye-stopping and comfortable experience.

The best thing when you go for patio furniture cushion is to look out for thick and soft cushions. The best are not actually those which are found in the market, but the ones which are made to match your brand/model of patio furniture. For a patio furniture cushion you should know exactly what type and how thick you want your cushion to be. If you want these to look and feel great, it is advisable that the patio furniture cushion be about four to six inches thick.

Life can be very rewarding once you put up a patio that complements the house and also gives you a place to relax in the arms of nature. People make the mistake of buying the best wood or material there is and then put in some cheap cushions, which robs the esthetics from the whole thing. You can get a very luxurious feeling and look if the cushion is of a better quality material. In this manner, the patio furniture cushion is really playing a crucial role in the overall beauty of the patio.

Some people do indeed craft the best furniture from the most exquisite materials and then top it with average and/or below average cushions, totally destroying its esthetic value. This is why it is important to choose not only the right thickness for comfort, but also the right material and color combination to have the best impact on the look of the furniture. In this way you will be able to enjoy your patio both indoors and outdoors, much to the envy and admiration of your neighbors.

10 Tips for Keeping Your Ceramic Tiles Looking Great

You enter the bathroom. You turn on the lights. You dream of having a nice, relaxing bath or a cold, invigorating shower. What you get instead is a strangled shriek and despair.

Yes, ceramic tiles sure brighten up any bathroom or kitchen with their artistic and wonderful designs. We all love that glossy finish and the pearl-like shine. But moldy and dirty ceramic tiles are a big turn off, especially to those who have a fetish about bathing in a spotlessly clean bathroom.

What about your kitchen? Can you bear placing your food atop a surface that looks dubious? Can you imagine the germs sticking themselves to your favorite vegetable?

Alas, help from professional cleaners may cost us hundreds to thousands of dollars. That money can be better spent on other worthwhile items. All we need to know is how to properly care for our ceramic tiles so they'll keep looking clean and brand new.

1. Wipe 'Em Daily

Keep this as a mantra to yourself. This is easy enough to do, especially on kitchen counters, and it won't take you more than 15 minutes. All you need is a wiping cloth and some water. Always wipe surfaces after use. This is the best method from keeping dirt and debris from piling up. Dry tiles with a cloth or a sponge to prevent mildew formation.

2. Felt and Pads

Do you have heavy furniture made of wood, metal, aluminum or even plastic? Try to place felt or similar pads to their legs. This will help reduce the wear and tear on the tiles and will also facilitate easier shuffling and movement.

3. Protection with Mats

All houses have spots where heavy pivoting occurs. This could be your doorstep, or in front of the kitchen sink or the bathroom door. Situate mats of good quality to protect your tiles from pressure, weight or friction. These mats can also reduce dirt, grit, sand and oil that is deposited in your tiles since the fibers of the mat trap them nicely.

Make sure to wash the mats every once in a while to remove the deposits. Replace worn mats if possible.

4. Weekly Appointments with the Damp Mop

Aside from the daily regimen of wiping them, your ceramic tiles can also benefit a great deal from mopping them with a solution of vinegar and water. Mix ½ cup of vinegar to a gallon or so of water and use this to mop your floor.

Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Then mop the floor again with tap water to remove most of the vinegar and odor. The mild acidity of the vinegar will promote the death of mildew. Also, refrain from using soaps on the tiles as they will dull they surface.

5. Kiss Grime Away With Bleach

Ooh, your neighbor tracked his mud-soiled boots on your spotless white tiles. Even though you want to beat him up bad, you might want to hold in the urge because you need to act on that dirt, fast! Wipe off most of the dirt with a wet cloth. If there are stubborn streaks remaining on your beautiful tiles, it's time to bring out the bleach.

Add about half a liter of bleach to a bucketful of water. Make sure you have your rubber gloves on, since bleach is very harsh on the skin. Mop the floor with the solution and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. After that, try rinsing it with water.

If stains still remain, repeat the process until you get back your shiny, sparkly tile. Remember to wipe it dry with a clean cloth after the procedure.

6. Clean that grout!

Grout is the cemented space between your tiles. White tiles usually have a white grout and white grout is a breeding ground for mildew, molds and dirt.

If you already spot mild discolorations on your grout, it's time to mix about ¼ of a mild detergent to a bucketful of water. Splash some on the grout and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. After that, try scrubbing the grout with a soft cloth. The color should fade away quickly. Again, wipe your tiles with a dry cloth after the procedure.

7. Abrade me not

NEVER use abrasives and harsh soaps on your tiles. They reduce the shine and polish as well as make cracks and pits that would be a more ideal ground for dirt and grime to settle in. Use only mild soaps and detergents. Always dilute strong acids before using them on your tiles.

8. Can you hand me that toothbrush?

Stubborn dirt and grime in your grouts? Well it's time to give them a little push. This will involve getting down on you hands and knees but it's all worth it when you see your tiles looking like they're newly installed.

Again, make a mild detergent solution from ¼ cup of detergent to a bucketful of water. You can add a small amount of bleach if you want, but remember to protect your hands and knees. Let it sit for a few minutes.

After that, get a used toothbrush and start scrubbing your grout. Be careful not to damage the side of the tiles. The ugly dirt should give way even with only a little force. Rinse with water and wipe dry.

9. Stock on Drying Cloth and Sponges

You might have noticed that every procedure call for wiping your tiles dry. That's because there is no sense in performing the task yet leaving molds and mildew for a chance to attack. Remember that these organisms grow best in moist surroundings.

With all that cleaning going on, you'll get tired from washing and drying the same cloth everyday so stock up for convenience.

10. Be Patient.

The thing is, people look up handy tips and tricks to cleaning their tiles. But some mail back, feeling very unsatisfied with the results. The usual problem here is PATIENCE. If a specific procedure tells you to wait for 15 minutes, it's best to follow it. See, waiting allows the solution to seep into the layers of dirt and grime. The solution loosens up impacted dirt and facilitates removal. This is the key to a successful cleaning venture.

With that said, have fun in cleaning and remember: Always wipe it dry.

Exterior Painting Preparation

Exterior painting starts with systematic preparation of all surfaces to be painted. Here are some simple guidelines and things to look for before continuing with the painting process.

Thoroughly inspect your home completely before moving on. This will prevent, if any, further damage to your home. Look for signs of blistering, peeling or chalking on the paint of your home. Water damage shows as rot or discolored areas. These problems will need to be properly fixed before moving ahead into the project. Mildew and mold are also other problems one may encounter while fixing up the home. After each repair, take further steps to prevent any more damage from occurring.

Often, exterior preparation requires more effort and time because the exterior of any house receives more damage due to sunlight, which causes paint to fade and wood to warp, and weather, which can cause mildew and mold and other kinds of damage. First, start with pressure washing to remove dirt and to make sure the surface is clean. Usually after pressure washing, you can begin repairs depending on the severity of the damage. If the damage is already apparent, make the repairs as soon as possible. However, most of the damage is noticeable after pressure washing. After washing and all repairs, move onto scraping and sanding.

Caution must be taken in this stage due to environmental and physical concerns. For example: if your house was built and finished before 1980, it is possible that your finish may contain lead based paint. Find out what you need to do and what not to do in those cases. It's better to be safe than sorry especially when it comes to your own health and home.

Apply a high quality primer to all raw areas after scraping and sanding. As you continue further on, you may need to apply caulking to seal any areas where water can leak. Pay special attention to windows and doors.

Now mask any areas where you do not wish for paint to go. Masking paper and tape should be used instead of news paper. A hand held masking machine will make this task easier. This is as important as the rest of the preparation. If not done correctly, the entire exterior painting job can be severely affected.

If you chose to hire a professional painting contractor to do the job, make sure that proper exterior paint preparation and repairs is included with the contract proposal. This makes it easier on you so you do not have to go and find a repair contractor. It also makes it easier on the contractor. If they know what kind of repairs might take place, they can find out whether or not they need a building permit with inspection. If all steps are followed and all repairs made, your finish can last beautifully for many years.
