Patching a Hole in Six Easy Steps
How many of you have ever come into the house a little too fast and slammed your doorknob through the drywall? Sound familiar? Well here are six simple steps to fixing any hole in your home, saving you costly repairs in the future.
To patch your hole, you will need the following:
Carpenter's Square with Level Wallboard Saw Scrap Piece of Wallboard Hot Glue Gun Wallboard Tape (Generally Made of Fiberglass) Premixed Taping Compound (Wall Putty) Putty Knife Wet Sander
Note: You can pick up all of these things at your local Lowe's, Home Depot or any other home improvement store.
And now the six simple steps:
1. First, you want to outline (draw a square) around the damaged area with your carpenter's square.
2. Next, you will use your wallboard saw and cut the outline out, removing all of the damaged area.
3. After this, use your extra piece of wallboard as a backer to hold the patch. Now, to do this, you will need to put hot glue on the top part of the wallboard piece and place it on the inside of the hole. 4. Now you will cut a piece of wallboard to fit the opening. Note: Be sure that your piece is the same thickness as the wall. As in step 3, apply hot glue on one side of the piece and press it against the backer piece (from step 3) until the glue sets.
5. The next step is to use the wallboard tape on the seams of the wallboard piece. You will then have to cover the tape and hole with the taping compound using your putty knife.
6. Last step! After compound dries for the first time, apply another coat. Once that layer dries, you will then use your wet sander( after wetting it) and lightly sand the compound until the area smoothes. Re-paint it and you're done!!
Now wasn't that easy? And you thought you could never do something like this. Great job!!
